Can someone please explain to me the difference between a plumber and a contractor?

If I need to fix a water leakage in the basement for example, should I contact a plumber or a contractor? Who is more expensive? what are their different fields of expertise?
THANKS.

Who hooks up the electric on the electric hot water heater, plumber or electrician?
Filed Under Maintenance & Repairs | 8 Comments
I had a new electric hot water heater put in. Who is supposed to hook up all the electric? The plumber who put it in or an electrician? And is it supposed to be sitting directly on the floor?

What is the avg cost to have a plumber, not rooter, to clean out roots in a sewer line in Cent. Arkansas?

I have used rooter svcs in the past they are ok but usually want to add on services to make extra money. Any idea what plumber charge for the same service in Central Arkansas? I have roots in sewer line that need to be removed.

If you called a plumber because your dishwasher was backed up and filled with dirty water?
Filed Under Maintenance & Repairs | 3 Comments
If you called a plumber because your dishwasher was stopped up and filled with dirty water, should their job be getting the dirty water out of the dishwashers as well as clearing the stopped up plumbing?
The dishwasher won’t work — it just hums — and so the water won’t drain. They said it wasn’t their problem and charged me $240.
Thanks, grenter.
I didn’t run the dishwasher — the dishwasher was backed up because of the plumbing.

Can I bring my water heater up to code with out hiring a plumber?
Filed Under Maintenance & Repairs | 5 Comments
Our home waranty company said they will not install a new water heater unless one of THEIR vendors brings it up to code, which I think is a bunch of bull…Their plumber quoted us $530 JUST TO BRING IT UP TO CODE…..how difficult is it to bring it up to code? They say it needs a drain system installed.
Yes my home warranty company company (HWA) not the homeowners insurance…they say we need a drain pan installed and a drain line going outside….this sounds to me like i can buy a drain pan at home depot and the drain line will consist of running some pvc …I’m just not sold on the $530 being quoted…

How does air get into the plumbing system and how do we get rid of it?
Filed Under Maintenance & Repairs | Comments Off
The air in our pipes causes a lot of delays and spraying when we turn on a faucet. The plumbers I’ve asked haven’t known the answer.
Well water…used to be just cold water but now both hot and cold.

How long should it take a plumber to install a sink?
Filed Under Maintenance & Repairs | 11 Comments
I had a plumber install a new sink and faucet. The old sink was already out and the faucet was new. It took him 3.5 hours and I was charged 407.08 ! He was supposed to be coming out to do that and to fix a small leak under each bathroom sink (2)(which he never got to) the lady on the phone told me about 500.00 to do all of it. Did I get totally ripped off?
P.S. it was a self rimming sink (not undermount)

What are different ways to unclog a toliet (besides the plunger) at home before calling the plumber?
Filed Under Maintenance & Repairs | 5 Comments
Water stays high in the bowl and then it completely empties out slowly. The plunger isn’t working. Are there any other methods to use before calling the plumber?

who’s responsibility is it to have (pay) a plumber come out?
Filed Under Maintenance & Repairs | 9 Comments
i live in a gated community and am renting a condo from someone (other than the gated community, our “landlord” owns the condo). seeing how we have no affiliation with the management of the community i wanted to know is it our responsibility or the owner’s to have a plumber come out? our toilet in the half bath is clogged or something and nothing seems to be working.
do i take this to the owner or get a plumber myself? thanks!
