momlawyer asked:

There was already rough plumbing in our basement ready for a shower stall and we already had the shower itself, etc. and parts. How long would it take a plumber to do the work? (Separate from the carpentry to have it look finished.) I’m trying to figure out what to pay a neighbor who did it for us during his free time while we weren’t there because he knows we can’t afford much and are just trying to sell the house, and he said to just pay what we think is fair and we have NO idea! HELP!

There are two ways to think about it…either hrly. or jsut a set amount for the whole job. If he did it a little bit her, a little bit there over a few weeks, probably better to pay for the job. But if he did most of it in 3 or less visits, figure about how many labor hrs. he put in…you can call a local plumber and get hrly rates. BUT, if it were me… I would pay him a nice amount for the job and ALSO get him a gift to show your appreciation…whatever he likes…an nice bottle of bourbon, gift cert. to a reatuarnt. But since he didn’t give you a price ahead of time, he is willing to take whtever you think is fair and doesn’t expect the get what you would have paid a professional plumber….sounds like a nice guy.. I would say in the $200 range if he didn’t run into any problems.

I would pay him $50.00. It’s worth at least that.
