If I need to fix a water leakage in the basement for example, should I contact a plumber or a contractor? Who is more expensive? what are their different fields of expertise?
THANKS.

A contractor can build you a house but subs out the different trade like, concrete, drywall, flooring, paint, pluming, electrical, etc, etc. A plumber does plumbing, cut out the middle man, call a plumber. A plumbing contractor will do work himself but also sub out some work to other companies so you don’t know who your getting

If the water is coming from a leaky pipe or plumbing fixture, call a licensed Plumber. If the water is seepage, call a contractor in the area that specializes in waterproofing basements.

A contractor is a general term meaning someone (a person or firm) who contracts to build things. Plumbers are contractors. Make sure you hire a licenced plumbing contractor because if they ***** you or mess something up they are held accountable to the registrar of contractors (ROC). You can also call your local ROC and they might reccomend the best plummer in your area to use.

The contractor does a little bit of everything but not an expert in everything. If the Contractor can’t fix the problem then he will sub-contract someone else such as a plumber to fix it. The Contractor will get the quote from the plumber on the price to fix the problem and adds on a few bucks and you get charged for that.
If you contact the plumber who is specialized in all plumbing problems and nothing else, then most likely the Plumber will fix it the first time.
The plumber should be your first choice. But when you do choose a plumber make sure you get several quotes as they may be different.
Plus always check out the vehicle they arrive in to see if they are well equip and organized. The more professional vehicle and appearance would be the one you choose over the Beat up Vehicle and bad appearance.

A plumber is a contractor.
Anyone you hire to do work on a home site is technically a contractor.
If you were building a new room onto your home you would hire a general contractor and he would hire and control the various sub contractors beneath him.
What you need is a plumber. He will work directly for you and he will repair what you feel needs done.

a plumber fixes pipe and fixtures associated with water etc. a contractor is anyone who contracts to do a job (or deliver goods). A general contractor is usually an expert in one or more field who coordinates a project. Like the building of a house. If you have a leaky pipe call a plumber or plumbing trade contractor. Electrical problem call an electrician. A general contractor can do these things or knows who can do these things but you will end up paying more.

Go with plumber, depending on the job and what you are first quote at, its always always good to get a second opinion/quote, contractors depending on if they do the work themselfs they might just hire a sub contractor for them which drives up prices, since everyone has to get their cut.Eliminate the middle man with a contractor, go with a plumber.

A plumber can be a contractor or visa versa. And there can be justs Plumbers and just contractors. Contractors have license to do business. But you can just call a plumber. That way you only pay one person. Not the hanger on.
