I ‘ve got a can in the garage that is pretty hard, crumbles, and not sticky any more. Tried working it and that helped a little. Is there something I can add to bring it back to a soft state or just throw in the garbage. What is the ingredient in plumber’s putty that softens it?

Oil is what keeps it soft. Thats why you can’t use it on marble countertops since it stains them. Throw your old can away and get a new one.

if you don’t want to purchase a new tub of putty, add “Cutting Oil” and knead until you get the consistency you’re after.

I believe it is linseed oil use to soften plumbers putty.

Additives for your putty cost more than the putty. It’s old-replace it!
