I take it back - the joke IS his point of view. Because it’s stupid (”I don’t think reporters should cover wars but I’m going to take this job of covering war that I am totally unqualified for because I am JOE and I should have everything handed to me whether I deserve it or not, even if I only have half a brain in my head, because I am a conservative!”)
To smart people, stupidity is very funny, especially when it’s so corrupt.

The joke is not to demean his point of view. The joke is that making this guy a reporter is ridiculous as he has no training in journalism nor even the slightest idea about a journalist’s role (as we saw in his interview with an Israeli reporter). He is no more qualified to be a journalist than a brain surgeon.
Yet they give him the job because of the name recognition and he’s arrogant and/or dumb enough to take it. Then he proceeds to spout stupidity.
It’s an inherently funny situation.
