It depends a great deal on how you present it, whether you attack the character or the person using inflammatory or accusatory language.
Joe probably can’t afford a lawyer, so you should be safe - though I think it would be just if he did defend his dignity, because I don’t think it’s fair that poor people who can’t afford proper legal support should be left as prey to attention-seeking vultures.

It’s not defamation to point out a possible family connection to a person with a politically significant conviction or to point out inconsistencies in a person’s claims. If it were I could sue you for this comment.

It’s not a good question if it’s based on a fantasy rather than a probably reality. It becomes especially important when John McCain appears to be basing the entire last two weeks of his campaign on said fantasy.

Who cares whether Joe the plumber actually flips burgers at the local McD’s. He asked a good question and Obama made the mistake, to his embarrassment, of answering honestly.

I don’t mean to be critical, but are you sure that joe and richard wurzelbacher are connected? I understand why you think the connection is likely, but I think it’s important to find out for sure instead of speculating. If you could prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they’re connected, then you’ve really got something there, otherwise it’s not worth much, sorry to say.
